The Royal Academy of Dance Graded Examinations consists of three dance disciplines:

    1. Ballet – the foundation and the most important part of the syllabus.
    2. Free Movement – influenced by and incorporating movements in common with other dance styles such as Natural Movement, Contemporary and Classical Greek Dance.
    3. Character – the theatrical presentation of national dance using original ethnic dance and music which has been freely adapted for the theatre. The three styles (Hungarian, Russian and Polish) were selected because of their historic importance in the development of the nineteenth century full-length classical ballets.
  • RAD vocational ballet (Intermediate Foundation to Advanced 2)

Together with the graded syllabi, the Vocational Graded Examinations by the RAD provides an in-depth study of ballet, developing students’ technique, music and performance skills and introduces pointe work for female candidates. This highly-focused and practical training prepares students for a dance, or dance-related, career. The syllabi are appropriate for students from the age of 11 years and who are technically capable of the work. Students wishing to study for Vocational Graded examinations should have the maturity and technical aptitude for demanding study and attend dance class minimum two times a week.

The vocational classes are invite only.

Tap and Modern

Perhaps ballet isn’t for your child or you’d just prefer they take on something more modern – if so, check out our tap dance and modern dance classes for children aged 4 and up!

  • ISTD Modern Primary to Grade 6

Modern dance provides girls and boys with the opportunity to develop a more current style of dance. The classes are lively and lots of fun! The children learn core dance skills which are developed and built upon as they progress through the grades. The lessons are based around a structured syllabus which involves learning set exercises as well as free dances, providing the children with the opportunity to take exams.

  • ISTD Tap Primary to Grade 6

Tap dance is excellent for developing a sense of rhythm and musicality – the children find it great fun learning different rhythms and trying to recreate them with their feet.

It also encourages appreciation and interaction with a different type of music. The classes are structured around a tap syllabus which provides the children with the opportunity to take exams.

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program using mats and yoga balls that has been designed to enhance students’ technique in all forms of dance by focusing on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance.

The program helps with injury prevention and rehabilitation and enhances the ability of athletes to perform at their best. It can be difficult for students to feel which muscles initiate the correct alignment in training. However, with the use of an exercise ball, the students gain a great sense of posture and weight-placement whilst feeling each correct muscle group working throughout each exercise, which then stays with them whilst performing.
