The Royal Academy of Dance Graded Examinations consists of three dance disciplines:
Ballet – the foundation and the most important part of the syllabus.
Free Movement – influenced by and incorporating movements in common with other dance styles such as Natural Movement, Contemporary and Classical Greek Dance.
Character – the theatrical presentation of national dance using original ethnic dance and music which has been freely adapted for the theatre. The three styles — Hungarian, Russian and Polish — were selected because of their historic importance in the development of the nineteenth century full-length classical ballets.
Together with the graded syllabi, the Vocational Graded Examinations by the RAD provides an in-depth study of ballet, developing students’ technique, music and performance skills and introduces pointe work for female candidates. This highly-focused and practical training prepares students for a dance, or dance-related, career. The syllabi are appropriate for students from the age of 11 years and who are technically capable of the work. Students wishing to study for Vocational Graded examinations should have the maturity and technical aptitude for demanding study and attend dance class minimum two times a week.
The vocational classes are invite only.
ISTD Modern Dance
Modern dance provides girls and boys with the opportunity to develop a more current style of dance. The classes are lively and lots of fun! The children learn core dance skills which are developed and built upon as they progress through the grades. The lessons are based around a structured syllabus which involves learning set exercises as well as free dances, providing the children with the opportunity to take exams.
ISTD Tap Dance
Tap dance is excellent for developing a sense of rhythm and musicality – the children find it great fun learning different rhythms and trying to recreate them with their feet.
It also encourages appreciation and interaction with a different type of music. The classes are structured around a tap syllabus which provides the children with the opportunity to take exams.
This is a non syllabus class aimed at students who wish to release stress and dance in a relaxed yet structured environment. There is no exam focus and is suitable for students who wish to join a dance class at a later age. This class explores efficiency in movement through the use of weight and momentum as well as finding ease, fluidity and power in the body.
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program using mats and yoga balls that has been designed to enhance students’ technique in all forms of dance by focussing on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance.
The program helps with injury prevention and rehabilitation and enhances the ability of athletes to perform at their best. It can be difficult for students to feel which muscles initiate the correct alignment in training. However, with the use of an exercise ball, the students gain a great sense of posture and weight-placement whilst feeling each correct muscle group working throughout each exercise, which then stays with them whilst performing.
Adult ballet is a perfect introduction to classical ballet technique. A fun, step by step guide, covering basic ballet positions and movements that will help you to improve your posture, coordination and strength. Suitable for beginners or those returning to ballet classes after a break.
Our ballet classes are focused around modern and classical practices. A typical class will include a barre warm up, barre exercises, centre and corner work with a short ballet combination of steps at the end of class. Work will include strengthening of legs and core muscles, posture and alignment, fluidity, balance and body awareness.
What to wear:
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows your body to move freely with no restrictions. A typical ballet class normally asks for leotards and tights but we are happy for adults to attend in active wear they feel comfortable in.
It is required to see the dancers’ legs so incorrect technique is dealt with in order to prevent injury. A chiffon ballet skirt or jazz trousers that can be rolled up would be suitable. Soft ballet shoes/socks can be worn.
